Paediatric First Aid 

The Department for Education through the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage para 3.25 mandates that there must be at least 1 First Aider with a current qualification on the premises whenever children are present.  There must also be a First Aider accompanying children on outings. 

Since 2016 all new entrants into the childcare sector workforce must complete either the Paediatric First Aid Certificate or the lower Emergency Paediatric First Aid certificate within the first 3 months of starting work to be included in staffing ratios.

We are proud to offer both face to face courses and a blended option, where the first 6 hours are delivered via our elearning portal and then a 6 hour practical and assessment day.

Blended Paediatric Courses


Since Covid we have offered a Blended Option on our Paediatric First Aid courses.  This option is ideal for those not wanting to be out of their setting for any more than necessary.  They are fully compliant, but you must complete the eLearning element at least 12 hours prior to the practical day.  We recommend signing up early and starting the eLearning 2-3 weeks prior to the practical day.

Paediatric First Aid - Syllabus 

The subject areas in bold constitute the syllabus for the Emergency Paediatric First Aid certificate and are delivered and assessed in a 6 hour face to face course.   The full 12 hour Paediatric First Aid Certificate can be delivered either face to face or using our eLearning portal.  The Emergency Paediatric First Aid elements are delivered and assessed on the practical and assessment day.
  • Be able to assess an emergency situation and prioritise what action to take
  • Help a baby or child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
  • Help a baby or child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
  • Help a baby or child who is having a seizure
  • Help a baby or child who is choking
  • Help a baby or child who is bleeding
  • Help a baby or child who is suffering from shock caused by severe blood loss  (hypovolemic shock) 
  • Help a baby or child who is suffering from anaphylactic shock
  • Help a baby or child who has had an electric shock
  • Help a baby or child who has burns or scalds
  • Help a baby or child who has a suspected fracture
  • Help a baby or child with head, neck or back injuries
  • Help a baby or child who is suspected of being poisoned
  • Help a baby or child with a foreign body in eyes, ears or nose
  • Help a baby or child with an eye injury Help a baby or child with a bite or sting
  • Help a baby or child who is suffering from the effects of extreme heat or cold
  • Help a baby or child having: a diabetic emergency; an asthma attack; an allergic reaction; meningitis; and/or febrile convulsions 
  • Understand the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider (including appropriate contents of a first aid box and the need for recording accidents and incidents)
